Description |
Crazy quilt made by Elizabeth Gaines in 1896. Crazy squares have curved sides; pointed ovals of maroon velvet in between; fabrics mostly silks including velvets, satins; mostly dark solids (not prints); at corners of center square white fabric circle on green fabric circle (flower?); olive green edging on crazy squares; foundation pieced manufacture; no backing, batting; maroon velvet turned over back to finish; piece seams embroidered w/ "feather", "coral", "herringbone", other fancy stitches; various flowers, leaves embroidered; other embroidery/designs: TL: dove, LPE?, fan?, spider web; TC: child w/ horn, painted bird w/ spider; TR: parasol, bird, pitcher, LPE; CL: EAH, swan bird; C: "E.A. Hargis to her daughter R. Eatmon Wilmot, Ark. 1896", "good luck" in horseshoe; CR: silver printed trademark, butterflies; BL: printed train scene w/ embroidery, tennis racket; BC: ROSA, bird; BR: printed? red L? 2 painted birds, butterfly, painted B Item Count: 1 Registrar Comment: Donors are mother (Wynona) and daughter (Adelle). Mother is Mrs. Lurel McClain. Maker is probably great-great aunt of Lurel, although given by donor as great-great grandmother. Quilt made in Wilmot, but brought in move to Rogers c. 1906.
